		 in Brussels, Belgium

		Dear Sir, Madam,

I am Maurizio Salvi, Policy Adviser on ethics of science and technology to President Barroso, President of the European Commission, and I am the head of the Secretariat of the European Group on Ethics (EGE), the independent body which advises the European Commission on ethical aspects of science and new technologies in connection with the preparation and implementation of Community policies and ultimately legislation (previous opinions can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/bepa/european-group-ethics/publications/opinions/index_en.htm <http://ec.europa.eu/bepa/european-group-ethics/publications/opinions/index_en.htm>

At the request of the President of the European Commission, the Group is currently working on an opinion on the ethics of Information and Communication Technologies, to be submitted to the Commission at the end of this year. The Opinion will provide the Commission with policy options for Governance of these technologies.

When preparing its opinions, the EGE engages in a broad consultation, involving individual experts, representatives of European institutions, other international institutions civil society and the Chairs of the national Ethics Councils in the European Union Member States. A roundtable will then be organised by the EGE on 15 November 2011 in order to promote a transparent dialogue between relevant stakeholders. Expected participants are from a broad cross-section of European society, including the scientific community, industry, civil society, policy-makers, media and the general public.

The roundtable is open to interested participants and will be held in Brussels, Belgium, Berlaymont premises. It is a pleasure to invite you or a representative of your organization to participate in our roundtable.

The Roundtable debate will take place in Brussels on 15th November 2011: 10h00 AM - 05h30 PM, at the European Commission: Berlaymont Building ? Room Robert Schuman - Rond Point Schuman, 1049 Brussels. Please find here below a map how to get there, a draft agenda will be sent in the next weeks.

The Roundtable will also be broadcasted on the EGE website. The video of the roundtable will shortly be published on the EGE website and thus publically accessible. The meeting organiser has to inform participants that the conference may be filmed and the images of part or for the whole event may be webcast and recorder. Full speeches or parts of them may be refused for interval documentation or in any public communication activity or pedagogical project.

Their participation to this public conference involves the acceptance of being filmed and no restrict fee will be asked for any use or remise of the recorded images.

We have planned the Roundtable with a limited number of formal expert presentations in order to put the emphasis on participation. Consequently, all participants, if they wish to do so are expected to contribute to the discussion that will follow the presentations. The meeting will be held in English.

If you know of people, who would be interested to join this Roundtable, please feel free to pass on this message.
