Profile for consideration for Steering Committee member of the IRPC – Jacob Odame-Baiden

Jacob is a seasoned professional with a combined 13 years working experience cutting across the ICT/telecommunications and the legal industry. He currently combines private legal practice (Associate Lawyer at Addo, Addo Legal Attorneys, Accra, Ghana) with an executive role as the Cofounder and VP for Legal and Engagement for the eGovernance and Internet Governance Foundation for Africa (eGIGFA). He is also a consultant to Diplo Foundations GIP Digital Watch observatory where he curates on issues bothering on Internet access, consumer protection and human rights.

Jacob has been active within the Internet ecosystem on the national, regional and global levels. He is a member of ISOC Ghana chapter. He is AFRINIC-25 Fellow (Mauritius) and has since been active within the community including recently mentoring AFRINIC-31 Fellows to better understand the workings of AFRINIC and how they can continue to engage after the fellowship experience. Jacob is an ICANN-66 Fellow (Montreal) and a member of At-Large and AFRALO’s Rules of Procedure Working Group. He is a Fellow of the 2nd North American School on Internet Governance (NASIG19 – Montreal) and a regular participant of the annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF)event where he does real-time reporting on various sessions for Diplo Foundation’s Geneva Internet Platform.

In November 2020, Jacob and the team at EGIGFA organized the first Ghana School on Internet Governance which ensured that some 30 selected fellows received training on selected IG topics. Key among the topics treated was on the area of Digital rights and Human rights in the digital age.

Jacob holds a Master’s in Communication Technology & Policy from Ohio University, USA; a Qualifying Law Certificate from the Ghana School of Law, an LLB Law degree from the University of London; and a BA in Computer Science and Economics (Combined Major) from the University of Ghana.

He holds several professional certifications including: PMP Certificate from the Project Management Institute, USA; Certificate in ICT Policy and Strategic Planning from Diplo Foundation; Internet Governance Capacity Building Program certificate from Diplo Foundation; and Online Moderators Programme certificate (Shaping the Internet – History & Futures) from the Internet Society.

Jacob has put himself up to volunteer to serve on the Steering Committee of the IRPC to help coordinate the common effort of actively raising awareness of fundamental human rights especially in digital spaces and encourage stakeholders of the Internet to play active roles in enforcing human rights in digital spaces so that together we can preserve and promote the public Interest of the Internet.
