[IRP] Call: Catch up and prepare for the IGF!

Robert,

That's great re helping with TEDx, coordinating with Toyia Stewart re website cross-linking would be a start...they're just getting to next stage too so timing is good.

Toyia will be visiting Syracuse...I'm suggesting August 26th when we have our next WiGiT (Wireless Grid Innovation Testbed) meeting.

That meeting is webcast; and will include maybe 10 or 15 minutes discussing TEDx and related events with Toyia; so maybe we in IRP aim to have a general plan by then. Any of you are welcome to hop onto that then; and hop off again when we go geeky.

I guess I could offer IRP a 10-15 minute window to intro itself to (small) crowd; which will also be in attendance @TEDx next spring.

Mix of universities, companies, government agencies, local & international...see http://wglab.net for more info on this option.

Personally speaking I'd like to see IRP values embedded in the WiGiT Version 1.0 open specs we expect to unveil... at TEDx. Sooner or later.

And maybe it's a win for IRP starting from inside rather than outside of a next gen of tech.

But...if this is too far afield for folks, no prob, we can continue to manage on separate tracks and just coincidentally both appear (IRP & WiGiT) @ TEDx/Ideas in Motion.

Hello everyone.

Sorry that I cannot make a meeting next week.

My wife Jenn and I are working on redesigning the new Charter site (http://irpcharter.org) and hope to have ready for 2011 IGF in Kenya, which I may be going to (hope to see some of you there!).

I would also like to help out with TedX Harlem in whatever capacity.

Looking forward to reading the meeting notes and catching up soon.

Best,
Robert Bodle

Hi Dixie, everyone,

re: TedX Harlem ? Lee McKnight is arranging for the IRP to be included as part of a TedX talk in Harlem. Who wants to be involved in this?

Permit me to introduce Marcus Glover, Jalina Stewart, and Toyia Stewart, members of the Board of Directors of the Living Labs Foundation putting on TEDxHarlem and related events at the Apollo Theater and other locations in New York City under the 'Ideas in Motion' theme. Toyia Stewart will be handling operations for TEDx so please keep her in loop.

TEDxHarlem is re-confirmed for March 27, 2012, NOT October 18, to permit more time for planning.

For IRP, the first idea was to use TEDxHarlem to promote discussion of the '10 Internet Rights and Principles' doc to bring message to - New Yorkers, UN; and media.

If our EuroDIG workshop crew wants to compress to TED format - meaning 1 hour? (Is that right Marcus/Jalina/Toyia?) - have at it. If anyone has a way way cool short IRP video..let us know.

New York is also convenient for celebrities who may choose to amplify our message. For example, a particular MTV / Sirius XM satellite radio personality may be interested in assisting IRP, both at TEDx; and at IGF Nairobi.

IF: IRPers would be cool with giving a few minutes to a 'guest emcee' type for the IRP workshop @IGF; that may be possible to arrange. I have already confirmed we will gladly work with our MTV friend for the IRP session at TEDx.

Can we discuss amongst ourselves and get back to our TEDx friends by mid-next week, on 1)who else wishes to get involved in TEDx; and 2) how we feel about using celebrities/media to - bring attention to our cause live from Nairobi? Assuming folks are generally cool with 2), then I suggest Dixie work details for the Nairobi possibility directly with Jalina, Marcus, and Toyia, of course I will assist.

Lee

Hi IRPers,

All has been fairly quiet on the IRP list over the past couple of months. However, things have bubbling away below the surface. Now is the time to have a catch up about where we are at on various initiatives and to plan ahead so that the IRP can make a big splash at the 2011 IGF in Kenya! We are going to have a conference call next week to discuss the IGF ? please fill in this doodle poll to let us know what time you can make. THE POLL CLOSES ON TUESDAY 2ND AUGUST at 5:00 BST.

Look forward to speaking to you soon, Dixie

================================================================================
Agenda for the call

The IRP Coalition has already achieved a lot since the 2010 IGF, we have:

? written a Version 1.1 of the Charter

? written the 10 Internet Rights and Principles

? Started issuing (and signing on to) statements about relevant issues

? consulted the Council of Europe about our Charter work

? delivered a workshop at Eurodig called ?Making the Internet work for Human Rights?

We also have a number of ongoing initiatives:

? An Explanatory Document for the Charter. Toby Mendel of the Centre for Law and Democracy is writing a document to accompany the Charter which will outline legal sources of the articles of the Charter. It should therefore be a useful tool for advocacy initiatives to promote human rights on the Internet. This will be sent around in the next couple of weeks for discussion.

? A Charter Version 2.0 ? we need to incorporate suggestions from the Council of Europe and from the Centre for Law and Democracy into the Charter. How should we do this and what other amendments are necessary?

? A new website ? Robert Bodle is putting together a new interactive website to promote the IRP and our work and issues. What belongs on the website?

? TedX Harlem ? Lee McKnight is arranging for the IRP to be included as part of a TedX talk in Harlem. Who wants to be involved in this?

On top of that the Kenya IGF is fast approaching and there are a number of things that the Coalition should prepare:

? Our IRP meeting: this is the main occasion to showcase IRP work and issues to the broader Internet Governance world, to recruit new members and ensure that important issues are aired. How can we use this space most effectively?

? The IRP is jointly organizing (with Ben Wagner) a workshop looking at the export of surveillance technologies. The idea is that the Charter will be a framing device for thinking about how to address a concrete real human rights issue ? and to think about what (if anything) can be done to address it. Who would like to be involved in this workshop?

? An IRP booth: the IRP have been offered a booth at the IGF if we want it. I think this would be a great opportunity to display our banner, and our literature (we have loads of punchy principles to hand out!). What else could we put in our booth?

? There is a possibility that the IRP may jointly organize (with FGV) a workshop looking at different sets of principles (including the Charter) to compare and contrast different principles, analyzing the pros and cons of different approaches and to what extent they represent key values. Provided it goes ahead, who wants to be involved in organising this workshop?

? The IRP should have a separate internal meeting whilst many of us are in Kenya to discuss the structure of the Coalition (and how to elect a new chair) and strategising for the future.

Anything else?
