Press Statement on the situation of Egypt  -January, 2011
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on  the Protection and Promotion on the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression calls on the Government of Egypt,  to guarantee full security for journalists, national and international as well  as the free function of all Press agencies in the country.  Encourages the authorities as well to facilitate the normal operations of  internet service providers and all forms of communications including the Freedom of Expression of internet users.
In particular urges the government as well to protect all Human Rights Defenders and journalists from any form of harassment and intimidation and to allow peaceful demonstrations and protests which constitute a legitimate form of exercising Freedom of Expression.
The Rapporteur has received information of several incidents where government supporters used violence or intimidation against peaceful demonstrations such as the events in Tahrir Square  on feb 3rd., and  in other parts of Cairo  several NGOs have been searched and their equipment confiscated specially Human Rights Organizations that have denounced Human Rights violations by security forces.
Several journalists have also suffered arbitrary detention and the confiscation of their equipment according to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists -CPJ- and Reporters Sans Frontieres, for which the Rapporteur urges authorities to immediately release any journalist or Human Rights Defenders that may still be on their such detention.
Finally the Special Rapporteur urges all States to comply with their obligations of protecting Human Rights according to the standards of International Human Rights Law which they have voluntarily ratify and reiterates that the respect for Human Rights and in particularly the full exercise of Freedom of Expression constitute the measure of any democracy.

Comunicado de Prensa sobre la situaci?n en Egipto
El Relator Especial de Naciones Unidas sobre la Protecci?n y Promoci?n del Derecho a la Libertad de Opini?n y Expresi?n hace un llamado al Gobierno de Egipto, para que garantice completa seguridad para los periodistas, nacionales e internacionales, as? como el libre funcionamiento de todas las agencias de prensa en el pa?s.  As? mismo, exhorta a las autoridades a permitir las operaciones normales de los proveedores del servicio de internet y todas las formas de comunicaci?n, incluyendo la Libertad de Expresi?n de todos los usuarios de Internet.
En particular exhorta al gobierno a proteger a todos los Defensores de Derechos Humanos y periodistas de cualquier forma de acoso e intimidaci?n y a permitir las manifestaciones pac?ficas y protestas. Lo cual constituye una forma leg?tima del ejercicio de la Libertad de Expresi?n.
El Relator ha recibido informaci?n de varios incidentes en los cuales partidarios del gobierno utilizaron la violencia e intimidaci?n en contra de manifestaciones pac?ficas  tales como los eventos en la Plaza Tahir el 3 de febrero y en otras partes del Cairo en los que varias ONG?s han sido cateadas y su equipo ha sido confiscado, especialmente Organizaciones de Derechos Humanos que han denunciado violaciones a los Derechos Humanos por parte de las fuerzas de seguridad.
De acuerdo al Comit? para la Protecci?n de Periodistas - CPP- de Nueva York, varios periodistas tambi?n han sufrido detenciones arbitrarias y la confiscaci?n de su equipo, por lo que el Relator urge a las autoridades a la liberaci?n inmediata de cualquier periodista o Defensor de los Derechos Humanos que pueda estar a?n detenido.
Finalmente el Relator Especial urge a todos los Estados a cumplir con sus obligaciones de proteger los Derechos Humanos de acuerdo con los est?ndares de la Ley Internacional de Derechos Humanos que fue voluntariamente ratificada por ellos y reitera que el respeto a los Derechos Humanos, y en particular el pleno ejercicio de la Libertad de Expresi?n constituye un indicador de cualquier democracia.
